Travel began as an enjoyable way of relaxing and disconnecting with concerns at home.  Travel soon became a passion. Our assumptions about the world are challenged when we face different cultures and new experiences.  The new experiences from travel help us to “break out of the box” of our daily routine and think in different ways.

Organizational Experience and Community Service

Michael brings the organizational experience of a 25 year non-profit career and professional consulting with a variety of non-profits including the YMCA, Stanford University, Shelter Network, the Core Social Services Agencies of San Mateo County, and El Centro de Libertad. Michael currently serves as Treasurer for El Centro de Libertad, Vice President of North Peninsula Neighborhood Services Center, is a member of the Woodside Terrace A.M. Kiwanis Club and is Lt. Governor for Division 34 of CalNevHa District of Kiwanis International. He continues to offer systems and programming support to a variety of non-profits that continue to use databases and systems he designed.

Professional Training and Certifications

Michael Akana is certified by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) as an Elite Cruise Counselor Scholar (ECCS), the highest level of certification available, having already achieved certification as Accredited Cruise Counselor (ACC), Master Cruise Counselor (MCC),  Elite Cruise Counselor (ECC) and a Luxury Cruise Specialist (LCS). He is also a Certified Niche Cruise Specialist (CNCS) by the Niche Cruise Marketing Alliance (NCMA) and is recognized by the Travel Institute as a Certified Travel Associate (CTA), a Destination Specialist (DL) in Hawaii and a Lifestyle Specialist (LS) in Luxury Travel.  In addition Michael continues to stay current with supplier training and attending annual industry conferences.
